New Orleans Signature Hurricane Cocktail Recipe

You must have to try this Hurricane Cocktail Recipe.  The Hurricane is the ultimate tropical drink recipe!

The most popular drink among visitors to the French Quarter may be the sweet Hurricane, topped with ripe juicy cherry and a fresh orange slice.  The Hurricane isn't a subtle cocktail. It's a powerful combination of fruit juices, sweeteners, and a double serving of rum.

The drink's name is derived from the glass it is served in, which resembles a hurricane lamp. Although Pat O's renowned courtyard remains an ideal spot for enjoying a Hurricane, you can easily make this drink at home anytime using the recipe below.

The Origin Of The Hurricane!

In the 1940s, in New Orleans, bar owner Pat O'Brien and his team invented this amazing drink. It was difficult to find American spirits at that time, but Caribbean rum was abundant, so Pat O'Brien's started experimenting and eventually landed on the Hurricane.

They decided to serve the drink in a hurricane lamp-shaped glass after developing it. They were a big hit and still drawing crowds to the original Pat O'Brien's.

In its New Orleans location, the bar continues to sell over half a million glasses of the cocktail annually, demonstrating its commitment to enjoyment.

What Is A Hurricane Drink Made Of?

The Hurricane is made with two varieties of rum, passion fruit puree, simple syrup, grenadine, lime juice, and orange juice. It has every quality that makes for a great party drink: it's fruity, sweet, and boozy.

The Hurricane cocktail is often mixed with bottled mixers, though the exact ingredients can vary based on where you get yours. The use of fresh citrus, premium passion fruit, and homemade grenadine is key in bringing the cocktail's sweetness within balance.

How Do You Make A Hurricane Cocktail?

The typical Hurricane Cocktail Recipe calls for two types of rum: dark and white.  You'll need to be cautious with this one because two ounces of each makes a single Hurricane quite powerful!  Orange juice and passion fruit juice make up the drink's juice base.  For more sweetness, add some grenadine and simple syrup.  Finish it with juice from 1/2 lime.  It is served in an ice-filled hurricane glass and garnished with a maraschino cherry and an orange slice.

Can You Make A Hurricane Cocktail In Advance?

You shouldn't make this in advance, as is the case with most shaken drinks. However, you can make a batch mix cocktail that will serve four people (double it for eight, and so on). Make this only one day ahead of time, as fresh citrus batch drinks are best enjoyed right away.

A word of caution: This deliciously tropical-flavored drink is quite powerful.
