What is Shrimp Remoulade?
Shrimp remoulade is a cold appetizer made with a creamy Louisiana-style remoulade sauce and cooked shrimp and served on a bed of fresh lettuce. It is a popular Southern dish in New Orleans, often served as a first-course appetizer during events such as Mardi Gras.
Is Shrimp Healthy?
Yes. Shrimp contains all nine of the essential amino acids (EAAs), making it a complete protein source that is both healthy and accessible. It also contains omega-3 fatty acids, which are beneficial to the brain. This type of fat is beneficial to overall health and the heart. Shrimp also possess different antioxidants that can protect your cells from damage.
Main Ingredients of Shrimp Remoulade
Shrimp
You can poach raw shrimp and then after peeling and deveining, cook in water seasoned with salt, bay leaf, and peppercorns for greater flavor. Let them cool before assembling the salad. Or, to make things even easier and save time, you can use pre-cooked shrimp from your local grocery shop or fishmonger.
The shrimp's size is very important! I prefer using jumbo-sized, wild-caught shrimp. You can also leave the tails on for their aesthetic appeal.
Remoulade
Remoulade, pronounced re-moo-lahd, is a typical French sauce. Despite its French origins, Louisiana spread and popularized it worldwide.
Its recipes differ considerably across countries and regions. The sauce is often made with mayonnaise, lemon juice, minced garlic, ketchup, pickle, Dijon mustard, hot sauce, and creole seasoning.
In the New Orleans area, chopped hard-boiled eggs are frequently added. This results in a creamy, tangy, spicy, and delightful dip that may be enjoyed all year.

Shrimp remoulade is a popular Southern dish in New Orleans. It is packed with a ton of delicious flavor, easy to make, creamy, tangy, and a little spicy! Served on fresh lettuce or even filled in a wrap, this recipe is a must-try.
Ingredients
-
½ cup mayonnaise
-
1 tbsp Creole mustard
-
1 ½ tsp ketchup
-
1 tsp Cajun seasoning
-
½ tsp minced fresh garlic
-
1 tbsp horseradish
-
2 tbsp capers, coarsely chopped
-
2 tbsp finely chopped fresh parsley
-
1 tbsp coarsely chopped green onion
-
1 ½ tsp fresh lemon juice
-
½ tsp hot pepper sauce
-
2 pounds medium-cooked shrimp peeled and deveined, chilled
- Lettuce leaves
-
Lemon wedges
-
Chives/parsley, Chopped
-
Bread
Remoulade Sauce
Shrimp
Optional Garnish
Directions
In a bowl big enough to hold the shrimp, add the remoulade sauce ingredients and mix until smooth. Add the shrimp and toss gently to coat evenly.
Spread lettuce leaves over the serving plates and top each with ¼ of shrimp remoulade.
- Sprinkle finely chopped parsley/chives, and serve alongside lemon wedges and bread slices. Enjoy!
Recipe Note
- I used pre-cooked shrimp for this recipe! You can use raw shrimp and cook at home.
- Don't overcook the shrimp! Remove the shrimp from heat when it turns pink and slightly curled! Overcooked shrimp will be rubbery and taste unpleasant!
- For optimal results, serve immediately or refrigerate for one hour before serving.
- If you like it spicy, add additional hot sauce or Cajun seasoning.
