Recipe Notes & Substitution
Rum drink comes in a lot of different forms. Here are some things you could try adding:
- Pineapple juice can be substituted with pineapple coconut juice. You can make tropical beverages like this one with any kind of fruit juice. Try making your own recipes for tropical punch by experimenting with different juices!
- You can use coconut rum, golden rum, or white rum. Depending on your taste, more or less.
- Strawberry syrup is also an option instead of Grenadine.
- Try making your own fruit juice instead of buying pre-made juice if you're feeling adventurous, have a little spare time, and a blender or juicer at home.
- To add a little more tartness, you may substitute some cranberry juice for the grenadine. For those who desire a darker color and a slightly tart flavor, Angostura bitters may be added in.
- To reduce the amount of artificial sugars, some people substitute pomegranate juice for grenadine. The color is identical, so it may be a viable option.
- Do you want it sweeter still? Add a small amount of simple syrup, ginger ale, or a lemon-lime soda, such as Sprite, for a different flavor profile. For added flavor, use a splash of bitters (I prefer Angostura bitters), ginger beer, or a sprinkling of spice such as cinnamon, nutmeg, or allspice. Club soda is another option if you want it to be bubbly.
Alcohol-Free Tropical Punch
Looking for an alcohol-free tropical punch or a kid-friendly recipe?
Just replace the rum with water. Any rum punch recipe may be transformed into a virgin rum punch drink with this method!
A nice experiment to try would be to substitute ordinary rum with coconut rum (which I haven't done yet). It'd be fun to experiment with different rum flavors here--a spiced rum may even be a delight!
What To Serve With Rum Punch?
My favorite way to present rum punch is with a large tropical spread. These are some recipes that pair well with my preferred beverage.
- Boudin Balls
- Baked Chicken
- Red Beans and Rice
- Seafood Salad

FAQ’s
Why is the drink called punch?

Is rum punch high in sugar?
Yes, there is a lot of sugar in this rum punch because I used both orange and pineapple juice. However, it is worth every single calorie!

Absolutely! This is the perfect drink for a gathering! All you need to do is prepare an additional 2 quarts at a time. After that, put it in the fridge until the celebration begins. In the refrigerator, it will keep fresh for about three days.
