Easy Homemade Beignets

Easy Homemade Beignets

Have you ever tried beignets? If you've never tried these fluffy and pillowy fried doughnuts, you're in for a treat. Why? Because this is the best beignet recipe!

I am a big beignet lover. While I can't just hop on a plane and head to New Orleans whenever I want to eat beignet, I can make something similar at home and share it with yall!

Although they're not quite as good as the beignets served at Café du Monde, which are considered to be the greatest in New Orleans, I can say they're pretty damn close. They come up golden brown, crispy, and chewy! Serve warm, dusted with powdered sugar.

What Are Beignets?

Beignets are soft, deep-fried squares of dough that look like donuts. When the beignets are fried, they form a hollow pocket in the center. Right after frying they’re generously sprinkled with powdered sugar. They taste best when served hot, especially when paired with a cup of hot coffee or café au lait!

This is the best and easiest recipe for traditional New Orleans-style beignets!

What Does A Beignet Taste Like?

Beignets are deep-fried and coated in a similar way as powdered sugar doughnuts, so they have a very similar flavor.

Tips and Tricks:

Before heading towards the recipe I'd like to offer some top tips to ensure you get perfectly fluffy, airy center, and golden crispy beignets.

  • To prove the yeast mixture, warm the water to 110 to 115 degrees Fahrenheit (F). Hot water kills yeast cells, while cold water keeps them dormant and prevents dough from rising.
  • When frying, use a deep pot to keep the oil from spilling over.
  • To make sure your oil is at the right temperature, use a thermometer. It should not be too hot or just warm. I love using this thermometer.
  • Beignets are best hot, so serve them right away! After sitting, they become unpleasant and soggy.
  • Finally, do not skip the powdered sugar! The beignets would be rather boring without it.
  • This dough can be made ahead of time and refrigerated for up to three days before frying.
  • If you are afraid of seeing that long list of ingredients on recipe card below, you can use this “Beignet Mix” as well. It saves lots of time and effort in sourcing different ingredients. You can also get this product from the New Orleans airport near the Delta Sky Room lounge if you are ever traveling that way.
